Republican Party candidates have been the recipients of my vote, my work and my contributions ever since I became old enough to cast a ballot in 1964. The Republican Party that I supported stood for fiscal responsibility, social conservatism, national sovereignty and constitutional government. That party no longer exists.

After seeing our son off for his second tour in Iraq last weekend, my wife and I returned home from Fort Hood, our son's wife and young daughter in tow, just in time to see the president sign the Military Commissions Act of 2006 into law. The president, with Vice President Cheney at his side, proclaimed this to be an historic day. In that, at least, Mr. Bush was correct. Oct. 17 will forever mark the date that the United States government severed itself from constitutional legitimacy.

(Column continues below)

In the words of the Declaration of Independence, "all men are ...endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights." The Republican Party used to understand that these rights, the most fundamental of which are articulated in but not granted by the Bill of Rights, do not descend from government. They were conveyed by God and are the natural law birthright of every human being, regardless of citizenship.

"Unalienable" simply means that neither the president, nor the Congress, nor the Supreme Court, nor all of them acting in concert has the slightest authority to deny those unalienable rights to anyone under any circumstances. Thus, when the president and his sycophants rail against those "who would extend constitutional rights to enemy combatants," they display a profound and malignant ignorance of our national heritage and attack the American nation's most sacred founding concept.

The Military Commissions Act, the USA Patriot Act, and FISA complete the facade of legality behind which the American Constitution is being systematically dismantled by an arrogant political clique that imagines there to be no limitations on its power. Of course, none of these "Acts" are legal in any constitutional sense, and every elected official who was complicit in their creation has violated his oath of office, betrayed the American people's trust and committed an assault on the rightful heritage of future generations.

What is happening is bizarre! Does it not trouble any of you that the president and his coterie imagine that they can take unto themselves the very powers and, under the cover of secrecy, employ the same inhumane tactics for which they so correctly condemned Saddam Hussein? Are you not bothered by the fact that the most vociferous supporters of the Iraq invasion, those armchair warriors who are prepared to fight until the last drop of somebody else's blood is spilled, have never heard a shot fired in anger or worn the uniform? Late at night, as you settle in to sleep, do you ever wonder how the American people will react when they at long last understand what has been done in their name?

That the Democrats are socialist idiots is without question. However, Mr. Bush and his neoconservative allies are even worse. These faux conservatives have mislead many good people and caused incalculable damage in the process. Perhaps we can begin anew to build a true Conservative Party on the ashes of this November's much-deserved defeat, which I fervently hope and pray will be terminally catastrophic for the treacherous idiots who have lead us to this bleak result.
